The island paradise of Boracay is a perfect place for watersports or simply relaxing by the beach. Boracay boasts of a sugary white sand beach surrounded by shallow azure blue waters ideal for swimming. The best part of the island is the four-kilometer White Beach known to be the "finest beach in the world". The sand is finer and brighter than most beaches in the archipelago, that walking on White Beach is like walking on miles and miles of soothing baby powder.
Located south of Manila in the central part of the Philippines, the island of Boracay is at the northwestern tip of Panay. Shaped like a dumb-bell, the island is 7 km long and has a population of 13,000 residents. Boracay belogs to the municipality of Malay in Aklan province, and has three communities or "barangays": Yapak in the north; Balabag in the center; and Manoc-Manoc in the south. The north and south portions of the island are hilly with elevations up to 100 mtrs above sea level, and is suited for extensive hiking trips. Numerous intertwining paths and trails, which may sometimes pass through tropical jungles, link the small villages with each other.
ATTRACTIONS
1. MOUNT LUHO - the highest elevation on Boracay Island with 100 meters above sea level, Mount Luho can be a tough climb but definitely worth the view. Once up there, a little kiosk serves cold water and softdrinks and one can take a rest in the hammocks between the trees.
2. PUKA BEACH - on the north coast, facing Carabao Island, lies Yapak Beach or Puka Shell Beach, the second largest beach of Boracay. Puka shell beach was made famous by the shiny white puka shells, which was the rage in fashion jewelry in the 70's and 80's. Collecting these shells was the first industry of the island. Today, one can still find remnants of the mounds of puka shells on the beach. Puka shell beach
can be reached by boat, hiking, mountain biking, motorbikes and tricycles. Near the beach, towards the village of Yapac, small eateries offer cold drinks and often the catch of the day for lunch.
3. SUNKEN FOREST - at the southern end of Bulabug Beach is an old fishpond with dead mangroves. Also known as dead forest, the sunken forest is a good place for photography and exploration.
4. SHELL MUSEUM - located at ilig-iligan beach, this museum has a collection of shells from the area and some ancient Chinese artifacts.
5. TIROL HERITAGE MUSEUM - a private museum at the northern part of White Beach with a display of Chinese artifacts connected to Boracay's history.
6. BAT CAVES - the caves on the northeast coast of Yapak is the home of cave bats and fruit bats with a wingspan of up to four feet. Naturalists, photographers and spelunkers, willing to brave the intense stench in the caves, hire local guides, usually young children from the village, to lead them through the jungle-paths to the caves. Environmentalists, however, would rather leave the fruit bats to their daytime sleep and wait for sunset at the White Beach, when thousands of bats fly right over their heads for the bats' nocturnal flight to hunt for food.
ACTIVITIES
AQUASPORTS - the island paradise of Boracay is a perfect place for watersports. Boracay offers a smorgasbord of exhilarating aqua action from swimming and snorkeling to scuba diving, windsurfing, sailboating, kayaking, boardsailing, and boating.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL AND FOOTBALL - many places along the White Beach put up volleyball nets during daytime. Mornings and specially later in the afternoons, people gather spontaneously and play for fun or challenging games. Beach football is also played spontaneously along the White Beach, culminating in two yearly championship events, where mixed tourist-teams play against teams from the Philippines, USA and Hongkong.
BOARDSAILING AT BULABOG BEACH - on the eastern side of Boracay Island is Bulabog Beach. It is the boardsailor's mecca that draws enthusiasts from all over the world, especially during the peak season from November to March. It has ideal conditions for speed, slalom, and high-winf shortboard sailing. Bulabog Beach is the site of the annual Boracay International Funboard Cup. White Beach, shielded from the northeast monsoon, is for beginners. Tabon Strait has superb high-performance sailing, but there is a risk of being swept away, so this site is for skilled boardsailors only.
DIVING - Boracay is the best place to learn scuba diving, as the island is surrounded by dive sites and the many dive shops that operate in the area have competent dive instructors to guide both beginners and professional divers. For the trueblue scuba diving enthusiast, Yapak in Boracay is a great dive ( See dive shop listing).
ECO-ADVENTURE / NATURE-TRIPPING - world-renowned Boracay is an adventure island ideal for island-hopping, hiking, trekking, caving, mountain climbing, biking, and horseback-riding. Trekking and mountain-biking can bring the intrepid to the island's quaint interior villages and to the edges' scenic rocky cliffs, discovering along the way many hidden coves with isolated beaches far from the tourist crowd.
PARAW REGATTA - sailboating and kayaking are popular sporting activities, with Boracay playing host to the annual Paraw Regatta, an intenational sailboat race that makes use of the native outrigger boats.
PARTY-HOPPING - the code in Boracay is strictly informal. Walking barefoot than shod is the rule rather than the exception. Swinging discos have the beach for a floor, giving dance a new twist. Nightlife on Boracay can't be beaten. From dusk to dawn, the island turns into one big party place where everyone is welcome to join in.
Some of the places to check out: Bazzura; Summer Place Bar and Restaurant; Hey Jude; Bom Bom; Pier One; and Cocomangas.
RECREATIONAL SPORTS - laid-back Boracay ia also the perfect venue for golf , tennis and bowling. For golfers, the lush and green landscape of the driveways of Fairways and Bluewater Golf Resort complement the water features created for the resort complex: gurgling creeks, rushing waterfalls and sparkling lakes.
ROCKWALL CLIMBING - outside Manila, Boracay Island has the only 40-feet (about 13 meters) high, professional climbing all.
SHOPPING - the market and souvenir shops provide endless possibilities for serious bargain shopping from trinkets and native accessories made of shells and semi-precious stones to exotic or contemporary beachwear and fashion artworks.

WELLNESS AND SPA - at the end of the day, unwind with a relaxing massage. The island never runs out of skilled masseuses offering massage services by the beach. For a more luxurious treat, visit the Mandala Spa, situated on a lush hillside above Boracay's White Beach. Mandala Spa offers various massages, scrubs, body wraps, deep relaxation therapies, and yoga classes. Those who want to take the spa package can stay the night in one of the 12 luxurious resort villas.
WHITEWATER RIVER RAFTING - rising near the peak of Mt. Madja-as, the Tibiao River descends almost 2000 mtrs on its short but tumultuous journey to the sea. The lower section of the river, known as the "chicken Run" is grade 3; the more difficult upper section reaches grade 4. The Tibiao has all the classic features of a tropical whitewater river, with rich vegetation hemming the banks, views of rice terraces, spectacular falls and clear water. The river is close to Boracay and is easily accessible.
